Step 29: Cut a strip of yellow onyx for the hat braid. Grind one side flat. Epoxy the flat side of the onyx to the top of the black jade hat bill.

Step 30: Grind the opposite side of the yellow onyx flat so that the finished gold braid is .040" wide and parallel to the top of the black jade bill.
Step 31: Cut a small triangle of red opal for the plume of the hat. Grind one long side of the red opal flat.

Step 32: Cut two rectangles of lapis. Grind one long side of each piece flat.
Step 33: Epoxy the flat side of one lapis rectangle to the ground side of the red opal plume.
Step 34: Grind opposite side of red opal/lapis flat.

Step 35: Epoxy the flat side of the remaining lapis rectangle to the side just ground.
Step 36: Draw a line bisecting the center of the plume. Then draw a line perpendicular to the center line at the tip of the plume triangle.
Step 37: Cut off excess material at the base of the hat and grind the edge flat to the horizontal pencil line, just touching the tip of the plume.
Step 38: Cut off excess material at the top of the hat so the hat is approx. .320" high.

Step 39: Epoxy the hat/plume assembly to the gold braid assembly making sure to center the center line of the plume with the Nutcracker's nose.
